Dry Cupping Therapy

Dry Cupping Therapy is a non-invasive therapeutic technique in which specially designed cups are placed on the skin and negative pressure is created inside the cup. Unlike wet cupping, dry cupping does not involve cutting or puncturing the skin. Modern physiotherapy clinics commonly use suction pumps or silicone/plastic cups to control the amount of suction.

During treatment, the suction gently lifts the skin and superficial tissues. This may increase local blood flow and create a stretching effect on the skin, fascia and muscles. Physiotherapists may use static cupping, where cups remain in one position for several minutes, or dynamic/gliding cupping, where cups are gently moved across the skin.

Muscle tightness and stiffness

Neck, shoulder and back discomfort

Musculoskeletal pain

Reduced soft-tissue mobility

Muscle soreness after physical activity

Improving comfortable movement and range of motion

Relaxation and temporary pain relief

Evidence for cupping is mixed, so it is best considered a complementary technique rather than a standalone cure. A physiotherapist can combine it with exercise therapy, manual therapy, stretching, strengthening and other appropriate rehabilitation techniques.

What to Expect

A therapist first assesses the patient's condition and selects appropriate treatment areas. Cups are then applied for a controlled period, with suction adjusted according to comfort and clinical goals. Temporary round red or purple marks are common and generally fade within one to two weeks. Mild soreness or skin sensitivity can also occur.

Dry cupping should be performed by a trained healthcare professional using appropriate hygiene and safety procedures. People with certain conditions—including bleeding disorders, blood-clotting problems, some cardiovascular conditions or significant skin disorders—may need to avoid cupping or obtain medical advice first.
