Disc Prolapse
Disc prolapse, commonly called a herniated or slipped disc, occurs when the soft inner material of an intervertebral disc pushes through a weakened or damaged outer layer. It most frequently affects the lower back, although it can also occur in the neck. If the displaced disc material irritates or compresses a nearby nerve, it can cause pain and neurological symptoms.
Common Symptoms
Symptoms depend on the location and severity of the prolapse. They may include lower back or neck pain, stiffness, pain radiating into the buttock or leg, numbness, tingling, and muscle weakness. A lumbar disc prolapse can produce sciatica-like symptoms when a nerve root is affected. Some people, however, may have a disc herniation without significant symptoms.
Causes & Risk Factors
Disc prolapse can develop from age-related disc degeneration, repetitive lifting, poor lifting technique, sudden movements, prolonged sitting, or previous injury. The discs naturally lose some flexibility and water content with age, which can make them more susceptible to injury.
Treatment & Physiotherapy
Many people improve without surgery. Treatment may include appropriate activity modification, medication prescribed by a healthcare professional, and physiotherapy. A physiotherapist may use individualized exercises, stretching, strengthening, posture and ergonomic training, mobility work, and functional rehabilitation to help reduce symptoms and restore movement.
MRI may be used when clinically indicated to evaluate soft tissues and identify disc displacement. Surgery may be considered in selected cases when symptoms persist or significant nerve compression causes neurological problems.
Important: Seek urgent medical attention if disc-related symptoms are accompanied by new severe weakness, numbness around the groin/saddle area, or loss of bladder or bowel control. These can indicate serious nerve compression requiring immediate evaluation.
