Neck Pain

Neck pain is a common musculoskeletal problem that can affect people of all ages. It may develop because of poor posture, prolonged computer or mobile-phone use, muscle strain, sudden movements, sleeping in an awkward position, or age-related changes in the cervical spine. The pain may be felt around the neck, shoulders, upper back, or sometimes extend toward the head and arms.

Common symptoms include neck stiffness, muscle tightness, reduced neck movement, shoulder discomfort, headaches, and pain while turning or bending the neck. In some cases, irritation of a nerve may cause tingling, numbness, or weakness in the arm or hand. Persistent or recurring symptoms should be evaluated by an appropriately qualified healthcare professional.

Physiotherapy for Neck Pain

Physiotherapy can help improve mobility, reduce muscular tightness, and restore functional movement. Depending on the individual's condition, a physiotherapist may use manual therapy, therapeutic exercises, posture correction, stretching, strengthening exercises, and other appropriate physiotherapy techniques.

Treatment commonly focuses on strengthening the deep neck and upper-back muscles, improving shoulder-blade control, correcting postural habits, and gradually returning the patient to normal activities. Patients who spend long hours at a desk can also benefit from ergonomic adjustments, regular movement breaks, and maintaining a comfortable working posture.

Prevention & Healthy Habits

Maintain good sitting posture, keep computer screens at a comfortable eye level, avoid holding your phone in awkward positions for long periods, use a suitable pillow, and take regular breaks from prolonged sitting.

Important: Severe or sudden neck pain, pain following an injury, significant weakness or numbness, problems with walking or balance, or symptoms accompanied by other concerning changes require prompt medical evaluation rather than self-treatment.
