Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a common joint condition in which the tissues within a joint gradually change and the protective cartilage becomes damaged. It commonly affects the knees, hips, hands and spine, and may cause pain, stiffness and difficulty with everyday movements. In knee osteoarthritis, cartilage that normally cushions the ends of the bones becomes thinner and rougher; advanced disease can be associated with reduced joint space and bone-spur formation.

Common Symptoms

People with osteoarthritis may experience joint pain, stiffness, swelling, reduced flexibility and difficulty walking or performing activities such as climbing stairs. Symptoms can be particularly noticeable after periods of inactivity or following physical activity. The severity of symptoms can vary considerably from one person to another.

Causes & Risk Factors

Age is an important risk factor, but osteoarthritis is not simply an inevitable part of ageing. Previous joint injuries, repetitive joint stress, body weight, certain inherited characteristics and other joint conditions can increase the likelihood of developing OA.

Physiotherapy & Management

Management is generally aimed at reducing symptoms, improving movement and maintaining independence. A physiotherapist may design an individualized program involving strengthening exercises, flexibility and mobility exercises, functional training and guidance on activity modification. Exercise can help people with knee osteoarthritis maintain movement and improve physical function.

For knee OA, healthcare professionals may also consider other options depending on symptoms and severity, including weight management, medication, injections or surgery when appropriate. An X-ray may help clinicians assess characteristic changes such as joint-space narrowing and osteophytes, but medical imaging should be interpreted by a qualified professional.

Early assessment and an individualized treatment plan can help people remain active and manage osteoarthritis more effectively.
