Spinal Injury

Spinal injury, particularly spinal cord injury (SCI), occurs when the spinal cord or the nerves at the end of the spinal canal are damaged. It may result from road traffic accidents, falls, sports injuries, violence, or non-traumatic conditions such as tumors, infections, or degenerative diseases. The effects depend greatly on the location and severity of the injury.

Common Symptoms

Symptoms can include back or neck pain, weakness, numbness, tingling, loss of movement or sensation, difficulty walking, and problems with balance. More severe injuries may affect breathing and the control of bladder, bowel, blood pressure, or body temperature. Spinal cord injuries may be classified as complete or incomplete, depending on how much sensory and motor function remains below the injury level.

Diagnosis & Treatment

A suspected spinal injury requires urgent medical assessment. Doctors may perform neurological examinations and use imaging such as X-rays, CT scans, or MRI to evaluate the spine and spinal cord. Depending on the injury, treatment can involve spinal stabilization, surgery, medication, and specialized medical care.

Role of Physiotherapy

Rehabilitation is an important part of spinal cord injury management. Physiotherapy may focus on maintaining joint mobility, improving muscle strength, balance and coordination, transfer training, wheelchair skills, standing or gait training when appropriate, and preventing complications such as stiffness and pressure injuries. Rehabilitation programs are individualized according to the person's neurological level, functional abilities, and goals.

Early, appropriate medical care followed by ongoing multidisciplinary rehabilitation can help maximize functional independence and quality of life.

Important: A suspected spinal cord injury after an accident or fall is a medical emergency. Avoid unnecessary movement and seek emergency medical care immediately.
