Spondylitis

Spondylitis refers to inflammation affecting the vertebrae and joints of the spine. It can occur in different forms, including ankylosing spondylitis and other forms of axial spondyloarthritis. These conditions can cause persistent back pain, stiffness and reduced spinal movement. Ankylosing spondylitis is a long-term inflammatory condition that can eventually cause parts of the spine to fuse in some people.

Common Symptoms

The symptoms vary depending on the type and severity of spondylitis. Common symptoms include lower-back pain, spinal stiffness, neck or upper-back discomfort, reduced flexibility and fatigue. In inflammatory forms such as ankylosing spondylitis, pain and stiffness are often worse in the morning or during periods of rest and may improve with movement. Pain can also affect the hips, knees or other joints.

Causes & Diagnosis

The causes depend on the specific type. Ankylosing spondylitis is associated with immune-system inflammation and has a strong genetic association with the HLA-B27 gene, although having the gene does not necessarily mean a person will develop the condition. Diagnosis may involve a medical examination, blood tests and imaging such as X-rays or MRI scans.

Physiotherapy & Treatment

Management depends on the underlying condition and may include exercise, physiotherapy and medication. Physiotherapy can help maintain spinal mobility, improve posture, increase flexibility and strengthen supporting muscles. A customized exercise program may include stretching, mobility exercises, strengthening and, when appropriate, hydrotherapy. Staying physically active is an important part of managing ankylosing spondylitis.

Early assessment is important when back pain and stiffness persist, particularly when symptoms are worse at night or in the morning. Treatment should be individualized by a qualified healthcare professional based on the specific type of spondylitis.

Note: “Spondylitis” is sometimes used loosely for different spinal conditions. Cervical spondylosis, for example, is an age-related degenerative condition and is different from inflammatory spondylitis.
